HAWTHORN GALLERY . . . HAY-ON-WYE

Situated in the heart of the picturesque Welsh Marches market town of Hay-on-Wye, Hawthorn began as the personal studio and exhibition space of Welsh artist Barry Martin-Andrews. Born in South Wales and now long settled in Hay-on-Wye, Barry’s work is rooted in a deep connection to landscape and place. His paintings and mixed-media works are less concerned with literal representation and more with capturing atmosphere, memory and the quiet emotional pull of the land.

Working in an intuitive and exploratory way, Barry draws on a wide range of materials — inks, pigments, soot, ash, charcoal, tannin, metal powders, graphite and found elements — allowing process, time and chance to shape each piece. His work seeks to convey how a place feels rather than how it simply appears, inviting the viewer into a slower, more reflective way of looking.

Over time, Hawthorn has gently evolved from a single artist’s studio into a gallery that celebrates a wider creative community. While Barry’s work remains at its heart, the gallery now welcomes a growing number of artists and makers from Wales and across the UK, creating a space where different practices sit comfortably alongside one another.

This winter’s exhibition reflects that spirit of openness and exchange, bringing together ceramics and contemporary jewellery in a rich and varied showcase. The ceramic work ranges from functional forms to sculptural pieces, with an emphasis on surface, texture and the individuality of each maker’s approach.

Jewellery forms an important part of the exhibition, with makers working in materials including titanium, niobium, resin, sterling silver, enamel and dichroic glass. These pieces explore colour, light and form, often blurring the line between wearable object and small-scale artwork.

Alongside the winter exhibition, Hawthorn continues to present a carefully chosen selection of work — including glass, woodturning, art cards and giclée prints — a small selection of which is shown below, each chosen for its individuality and the stories it carries
