HAWTHORN GALLERY . . . HAY-ON-WYE
Situated in the heart of the picturesque Welsh Marches Market Town of Hay-on-Wye , Hawthorn began as the personal studio and exhibition space of Welsh artist Barry Martin-Andrews . Originally born near Merthyr Tydfil and long since settled in Hay-on-Wye , Barry’s paintings are rooted in a deep personal connection to landscape and place.

Over time, Hawthorn has gently evolved from a single artist’s studio into a gallery that celebrates a wider creative community . While Barry’s work remains at its heart , the gallery now welcomes a growing number of artists and makers from Wales and across the UK, creating a space where different practices sit comfortably alongside one another . This Spring’s exhibition reflects that spirit of openness and exchange . . . bringing together ceramics , woodwork , glass , fabrics and contemporary handmade jewellery in a rich and varied showcase . The ceramic work ranges from hand decorated functional forms to deeply sculptural pieces with an emphasis on experimentation , surface , texture and the pure individuality of each maker’s approach.

Jewellery forms an important part of the exhibition, with makers working in materials including titanium , niobium , acrylic, resin , oxidised and raw sterling silver , enamel and dichroic glass. These pieces explore colour , light , form and also movement in relation to the body . . . often blurring the line between wearable decorative objects and small scale artworks .

Alongside this Spring's Exhibition , Hawthorn continues to present a carefully chosen selection of work . . . a small selection of which is shown below . . . and each specifically chosen for its individuality and the story it carries .
